In round 2 of this new blog series, I chat to Heather, another busy mama, who runs Woken Giants and her own blog, That’s How We Do

Tell me a little bit about yourself?
I’m a 32 year old Mama of 3, I like challenges and doing things that are a wee bit out of my comfort zone, and I’m a redhead (think what you will hahahah). I run my own business from home, so that allows the flexibility to be able to pick the kids up and be Mama taxi, as well as fit my workouts in…….most of the time.

How do you like to stay active?
I like to set goals that are Events. Or goals that have a specific deadline. I’m really a “works better under pressure” kinda girl, so I find if I don’t have those goals in place that I’ve committed to then I end up slacking off soooo much and my health and fitness goes kaput really freakin fast. So for me, I was really in a massive rut after I’d had my last baby in 2016, I was probably only going to the gym once every 2 to 3 weeks, I was sleeping a lot and letting convenience foods start to affect my energy, I mean if you have a baby you know what it’s when you’re tired every damn day. I was challenge with entering a Bodybuilding competition, which of course I initially scoffed at.
But after finding out more about it I realise it was for real life people, the category was Beach body, so I didn’t have to get super crazy lean.
Anyway, I committed to it and then the exercise just became part of everyday routine. Yaaay!

Oh I also play social Mixed basketball to let my inner fiery redhead out, at 5” I have to be a wee bit feisty to get anywhere hahaha

Have you always been active?
Mostly. Well at school, yes. I played a lot of sport at high school.
But it was after high school ended and I had kids that being active wasn’t on my high priority list and unfortunately I put on a lot of weight and really was not healthy at all. I learned a lot in those years, so I’m glad they happened, but equally glad to be out the other side.

What do you find hardest about keeping fit and healthy?
Getting up early to fit in my workout. Also the judgy looks if I eat Caramilk, #sorrynotsorry
Staying in check on the weekends. It can be so hard if I haven’t prepped, especially with the kids Rugby games on Saturday mornings, when I’m rushing around trying to find a mouthguard last minute and I still haven’t had breakfast.
Weekends are definitely the hardest.

How do you make sure you fit exercise in to your day?
I get up EARLY! If I haven’t done a workout by 10am I know there’s really only a 30% chance of me getting it done at all. So I changed my body clock to wake before 5am and Get those endorphins pumping before my brain realises what I’m making it do.
I also make sure I sign up to a class or program where I’m expected to show up each week. I hate letting people down so I know that if I say YES to something then I’m gonna show up. I’ve even gone to my 5am Ladies Lift class with a bung eye (from rubbing it in my sleep). Shame but I’d rather that than to be a no show.

Do you follow a set way of eating?
Sort of. I really depends on my goals, like right now I’m aiming to gain 2kgs of lean body mass in 6 weeks so my eating becomes more protein orientated.
If I’m trying to lose body fat then I eat very clean, whole foods, and I carb cycle. That really seems to work for me. 🙂

What can you do/what are you doing now, that you weren’t/couldn’t do previously?
When I first started back playing social Basketball after being out of the game for over 10 years, I could literally only last 5mins tops on the court before I needed my inhaler and my face was beetroot asssss.
Now I can play the entire game in good form without ABSOLUTELY needing a sub. I mean it’s nice to have a wee breather if we have enough players, but it’s not absolutely necessary for me any more.

OOOooo plus I can tie in a race with my 10 year old (he’s pretty fit too!)

What are your top 3-5 tips for maintaining your health in a busy lifestyle?

  • Have a goal and commit to it. Put up reminders all around you about your goal and how good you’ll feel when you achieve it.
  • PLAN PLAN PLAN, PREP PREP PREP – know exactly what you’ll be doing for your exercise and what you’ll be eating the following day.
  •  Tell EVERYONE about your goals! The more people that know the more people you have keeping you accountable without them even realising that’s what they’re doing.
  •  Make it sustainable for you. For me I love the 80-20 rule, where I eat healthily 80% of the time and 20% I can eat CARAMILK! Hahaha
  • Don’t try and do it all at once. Habit changes take time, so focus on making one great change that will stick with you before moving on to the next one.

Any other information you would like to share?
You’re bound to come across things that make healthy choices harder, and be tempted to choose the “easy” option.
I’ve encountered food intolerances over the last year and a half that have made healthy eating even harder. But there’s always more options, I just needed to expand my knowledge and try new things!
And remember, we all get knocked down, and there’s times that we just want to give up. Those are the times to reach out to someone that you know cares and has you back. A friend, a coach a mentor. They’re there to help you GET WHAT YOU WANT out of your life. So let them help you, then you both get to feel that great feeling of success. 😀
