Home / Advice / What is a goal? Why should I have them?

“the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.”he achieved his goal of becoming King of England”

Or in other words, a goal is something something you want, but don’t have/can’t do right at this time. It doesn’t need to be a huge goal, but it does need to be something you can strive for.

  • An overseas holiday
  • To keep your house tidy for a month
  • To lose 10kg
  • To run a marathon
  • Get a new job

Really, it can be anything you want to achieve.

But how?

This is a nifty little trick that I came across only very recently, and it helped me SO much. Instead of thinking well ahead, to what you want to ACHIEVE, concentrate on how you will get there. What do you need to do or create, in order to achieve that goal?

This is relevant to any goal, not just fitness, weight, lifestyle related.

To lose weight, you could focus on some of these:

  • Drink 1 extra glass of water, every day
  • Go for 3 walks per week
  • Eat more vegetables
  • Eat less takeaway
  • Go to bed 1 hour earlier

There are so many facets to weight loss, and if you focus on those, instead of “I want to lose 20kg”, it’s going to be a lot easier to face it, day in and day out. The same goes for any goal. What if you’re saving for a holiday?

  • Buy less crap in the mean time
  • Put any loose change into a savings jar
  • Have nights where you have cheaper dinners, so your food bill comes down
  • Set up an AP from your pay, into a separate account, so you never have the chance to spend it
  • Find fun, free things to do for “date night”, “family time” etc

It’s all the same, regardless of the goal. Little steps add up to big changes.

It’s important to have goals. They give you something to focus on. We all want something we don’t have, so what is it YOU want? They can motivate you to make changes, you can measure your success by them, and it keeps your eye on the prize.

Good old Tony. He knows his shit.

So come on. Share, share. What are your goals? What do you NEED to achieve?
